Sammy Baugh:  George Washington

The first president continues to be hailed as one of the best ever. George Washington set the standards of that job almost 270 years ago. Despite that length of time his name comes up all the time among people who love their country. The same goes for Sammy Baugh. Most can say he was the true father of the quarterback position. He was the first to make it a glamour position and still might arguably be the best football player in history.

Isn’t fitting that Baugh made his name in the town named after Washington himself? Baugh led the Redskins to multiple championships in the 1940s He was getting 90 and 100 quarterback ratings for a season back when it was normal to hover in the 50s range. The man was a giant of the sport. Like Washington he suffered some painful losses during his career but never wavered in his perseverance to carry his people to success.
