Comparing All-Time Great NFL Quarterbacks To American Presidents
By Erik Lambert
Politics and football haven’t been able to stay separate of late, much to the chagrin of the NFL. At the same time what’s done is done.
So why not try to find a way to lighten the mood a bit? There have been 45 presidents in American history to date. There have been several great and iconic quarterbacks since the league was founded almost a century ago. If one were to look close at personalities and career accomplishment, they might be surprised how much the two sides share. That’s what this article will explore.
Certain notable presidents will be named and who their counterpart is in the NFL. Be prepared for one or two surprises.
Barack Obama: Marlin Briscoe
Might as well start with the most obvious one. The legacy of Barack Obama will be center around the fact that he was the first African-American president in United States history. Marlin Briscoe instantly becomes his likeness because he was the first African-American quarterback in professional football, starting for the Denver Broncos during the 1968 AFL season. However, the connection goes deeper than both men simply being pioneers.
They were also underrated during their times. Obama brought America out of an economic crisis, killed Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, took the first real swing at health care reform and was the first man to support gay rights in the country. Briscoe was solid as a QB during his brief time in Denver then transformed himself into a quality wide receiver. He made the Pro Bowl in 1970 with the Buffalo Bills before helping the Miami Dolphins win two Super Bowls in 1972 and 1973.
