Danny Trevathan should be on the sideline for a while

A bone-crushing hit laid out by Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan has sent Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams to the hospital.

Late in the third quarter of Thursday Night Football with the Packers leading at home 21-7, Aaron Rodgers dumps a short pass off to Adams in the middle of the field. Akiem Hicks managed to get a full wrap on Adams and proceeded to make a tackle, but everything changed in a flash.

The veteran linebacker Trevathan charged in at the last second and delivered a helmet to helmet hit on Adams that sent his mouthpiece flying. A loud crack echoed throughout Lambeau Field, and Adams instantly froze on the turf.

It’s a hit that easily constituted an ejection for targeting as Trevathan lowered the crown of his helmet and zeroed in on Adams’ head.

It was launching. It was targeting. It was disgusting.

The NFL, embroiled in concussion scandals, must take this case and punish Trevathan to the fullest extent. That could mean a two-game suspension for the 27-year-old linebacker, which could potentially be argued down to a one-game ban.

Hits such as this one have been ruled illegal in football for a reason; Adams is lucky to have feeling in his extremities, let alone live.

Football is a game of speed and that will never change. This incident was not a case of a play happening too fast; it was a reckless player laying a dangerous hit at the end of a play that nearly cost a man his life.

Roger Goodell has the opportunity to win back support from NFL fans and players. For a league that has taken domestic violence punishments to the next level, it’s time the league addresses hits such as Trevathan’s up in a similar fashion.
