Christian Kirk Will Be the John Ross of the 2018 Draft
By Erik Lambert
More and more over the past few years the NFL has begun to prioritize speed at the skill positions and Christian Kirk could reap the benefits of that.
John Ross showcased just how far an undersized receiver can go in the draft if he’s fast. Cincinnati selected him ninth overall this past April. For those who remember Tavon Austin went eighth back in 2013. Pro teams love game-breaking speed on their offense and their special teams because they know one big play can change the entire complexion of a contest and even a season.
Kirk is shaping up to be that guy this coming spring. The Texas A&M receiver showcased why in a 50-43 thriller victory over Arkansas. Not only did he deliver 110 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winner in overtime, he also had a 100-yard kickoff return for another score. The Razorbacks had no answers for him and one can bet NFL teams were watching.
Kirk has already been compared to Odell Beckham Jr. with his mix of quickness, speed and sharp cutting ability. He’s only 5’11” which is always a concern but there’s no denying he’s almost impossible to stop without constant extra attention from defenses. That may work in college where the talent around him is questionable. In the NFL where it could be deeper though?
Kirk is the type of player who could make things easier for everyone. His constant vertical threat will keep defenders out of the box, helping the run game. His presence in the return game will lead to more strategy by opponents and favorable field position as a result. In the hands of a creative offensive coordinator there’s no limit to his value. That is what speed does in pro football. Time will tell on where he ends up going. One hopes it’s where he can thrive.
