Mike Glennon’s Season Ironically Rests With His Former Team
By Erik Lambert
Irony is always an amazing thing, and the NFL is no stranger to it. Chicago Bears quarterback Mike Glennon is about to find that out big time.
Anybody with a lick of common sense knows that Glennon has a short leash on him. Mitch Trubisky, the #2 overall pick is waiting in the wings. The Bears are giving the 28-year old a chance to be the starter over the guy who is undoubtedly the future. Their reasons stem from a belief the rookie isn’t quite ready yet. The preseason showed however that this may no longer be the case. Still the Bears stuck by their word and gave Glennon his opportunity he was promised.
That was honorable of them, but honor only goes so far in this league. Glennon had a chance to cement his hold on the job with a huge comeback win against Atlanta but fell just yards short. In fairness he was undone by a bad no-call penalty and a dropped pass. Still, the tape showed he missed a number of big opportunities. Now the Bears are 0-1.
History says things will change if that drops to 0-2. Teams that start a season with that record have only made the playoffs 11.7% of the time. Glennon needs to deliver a victory. It seems horribly fitting that his fork in the road between starting and getting benched rests against his former team.
With Pittsburgh and Green Bay on deck, this is likely the best chance Glennon has to get a win in the first quarter of the season. The fact it’s against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team who drafted him back in 2013, seems rather fitting. This is a team the quarterback knows inside and out. It’s the best chance he’s going to have all year to play a strong game. If he fails to do so and loses? The Bears will see the pressure mount ten-fold to stop messing around and just put the kid in.
