Understand that the New Orleans Saints had the best offense in football in 2016. One would think they didn’t have to do much adding to it this year.

Turns out they disagreed. By a lot. Drew Brees is already destined for the Hall of Fame. That is the second-most obvious fact on this planet behind water is wet. Adding to his numbers at this point is rather, well, pointless. Yet they continue to do so. Why? Probably because it’s what Sean Payton knows best and he doesn’t trust his defense will be much help in 2017. This of course based on the fact its consistently been one of the worst in the NFL for four years.

All one has to do is look at the additions they’ve made to the offense this year for an idea of resource allocation:

  • RB Adrian Peterson (Free agent)
  • OG Larry Warford (Free agent)
  • OT Ryan Ramczyk (1st round)
  • RB Alvin Kamara (3rd round)
  • WR Austin Carr (Waiver wire)

This is in addition to the wealth of other weapons they already have including Mark Ingram, Coby Fleener, Michael Thomas, Brandon Coleman and Willie Snead. It’s no longer a question of how many weapons they have but how many can they conceivably use?

One thing is for sure. The Saints are going to move the ball and score points. Perhaps more than they ever have, if that’s possible. By rights this team should be contenders for a Super Bowl but yet again nobody thinks that for a second because they don’t trust the defense. It’s sad when one thinks about it. Brees has a ring but common sense says he should have at least two given his production over the years. Maybe that’s because the team is so focused on keeping him armed to the teeth they’ve neglected the defense until recently.

Offense-only teams rarely win championships. Maybe New Orleans can buck that trend this year, but that’s asking a lot.
