The Steelers finally did it. After being linked to big names like Logan Ryan, Trumaine Brock, Nolan Carroll and even smaller names like Davon House, they finally landed a cornerback in free agency.

And all things considered he might be the best of the bunch. Haden rose to fame quickly in the desolate city of Cleveland.

After years of being a top three player on their ro

ster and receiving pro bowl honors as recent as 2014, Haden suffered multiple injuries in the 2015 and 2016 season that hindered his performance.

So why are Steelers so excited to pay and play Haden?

Well for starters, Ross Cockrell has been abysmal thus far this preseason. He has consistently struggled in games and camp. Pittsburgh clearly felt, he wasn’t talented enough alone to conquer Tom Brady and Co.

Cockrell isn’t the only concern. Haden brings a veteran presence to a cornerback unit that looked to start sophomore Artie Burns  as the premier corner. And also see significant playing time from rookie Cameron Sutton. Other talented youngsters like Brian Allen and Mike Hilton looked to be in line for playing time.

Even the veterans like William Gay and Coty Sensabaugh have shown they aren’t enough to truly elevate the Steelers pass defense.

Despite Haden’s recent struggles, a change of scenery, might be exactly what the former Brown needs.

Haden’s struggles seem to be largely attributed to injuries and a possible loss of confidence in the Brown’s organization after multiple losing seasons.

The Steelers really didn’t have much to lose in signing Haden, even if Haden is only 3/4ths the player he once was, he will have still be one of the better defensive backs on this roster.

Another reason for Steelers fans to be excited is Haden wanted to play for Pittsburgh.

Haden reportedly turned down bigger offers in order to play for Pittsburgh.

On top of that, the excitement from the players and the fans in landing a big name free agent for the first time in… forever, is a huge win for Kevin Colbert. And definitely a big vote of confidence for Haden.

Haden may not be the long-term solution to fix the Steelers secondary. But he just might be the missing piece to get super bowl number seven while all their offensive pieces are still there.
