Mitch Trubisky Was a Test For Mike Glennon and He’s Failing
By Erik Lambert
Some may think that Mike Glennon is resentful of the Bears. Resentful that they weren’t straight with him about being the starter for the team.
To be fair, first and foremost, they’ve said from the start that the job is his this year and have tried to keep their word. He’s got the starting reps in practice and been with the first offense in each of the first two preseason games. Sure the attention has remained on Mitch Trubisky with the media and fans, but the team hasn’t wavered from their promise. It wasn’t until seeing him play that things change.
Glennon has not looked like the starting quarterback he claims to be. Both of his appearances against starting defenses ended with ugly interceptions. His lone touchdown drive came at the end of the 1st half in Arizona when their starters had already been pulled. That’s not a good look for him. It’s not like the Bears have tried to sabotage him either. The fact is he’s getting his shot and he’s blowing it.
Mike Glennon learning there are no handouts in the NFL
When asked about the turn of events that saw Trubisky getting reps with the first offense in Tennessee, Glennon was quite candid. He said it felt like deja vu after his time in Tampa Bay when Jameis Winston replaced him as starter. Now here he is again, fighting for the job against another high draft choice. Some might feel sorry for him about that.
They shouldn’t.
This is the NFL. There are no handouts in this league. The only way to keep a job is by earning it. Chicago could only promise him an opportunity. Drafting Trubisky wasn’t some way to undermine Glennon. It was an attempt to hedge their bets at the most important position in sports. Also as a side bonus it was a way to see how Glennon could deal with the pressure of somebody breathing down his neck.
GM Ryan Pace and others have lauded his confidence. One would think he’d be able to perform despite the added pressure. Turns out the Bears are learning that maybe they might’ve misjudged the 28-year old. Everybody wants to be a starter in the NFL, but only a select few can prove they deserve it. Glennon has had numerous chances in his career.
If he fails to show up against Tennessee on Sunday, he’ll have nobody to blame but himself.
