New England Patriots: 5 Things to Watch in Matchup Against Detroit Lions
#5 How Long Will the Starters Play?
In many instances, the third preseason game is when starters play into the second half. Will this be true for the Patriots in Detroit? At many positions, the answer is no.
Over the past three years, Tom Brady has averaged just 14 passes in the third preseason game. He may not even hit double-digits this season as the Patriots will want to give Jimmy Garoppolo every opportunity to enhance his portfolio and Jacoby Brissett a chance to prove he belongs.
Across the board, the starters on offense may not see a ton of time. The running backs will continue to rotate at a high rate, Rob Gronkowski is too valuable to risk losing to another injury and the depth along the offensive line still needs to be resolved.

Defense is where the starters should see extended playing time. The unit has struggled this preseason, allowing an average of 29 points per game to two teams that averaged less than 20 points per game last year. The Lions aren’t exactly a powerhouse on offense, but they will challenge the New England defense. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia may not need to create a game plan, but he will have his hands full deciding which players will make up his defense.
