Preseason wins and losses are meaningless, but the New England Patriots coaching staff can’t be happy the team has lost two close games. The defending Super Bowl champions will look to finish the third preseason game healthy as they take on the Detroit Lions.

The third game is typically the closest fans will get to seeing a competitive contest in the preseason. Then again, Bill Belichick isn’t a typical football coach. Prior to last season’s third preseason game, Belichick told WEEI radio he doesn’t approach it as a dress rehearsal for the regular season.

"“In terms of playing time it might be a little different, but in terms of game-planning and strategy, what we see in the regular season compared to what we see the in third preseason game I don’t even think you’re in the same universe.”"

So while the Patriots may not be brainstorming ways to rattle Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, at least we’ll get a sneak peek as to who Belichick currently views as his 11 starters on both sides of the ball.
