Kendall Wright Just Made a Bold Trubisky Comparison
By Erik Lambert
Kendall Wright may not be a quarterback himself, but there are few more qualified to know what one is supposed to look like.
In fact no players are more able to make quarterback comparisons than a wide receiver. After all, they more than anybody are directly connected to the success of that position. So they learn fast what the difference is between good ones and bad ones. Wright has played with his fair share of bad ones. However, from 2015 to 2016 he got a chance to suit up with what appears to be a rising star. So when he didn’t dismiss a Mitch Trubisky Marcus Mariota comparison, it got interesting.
During a brief talk with CSN Chicago, he was posed that idea given his personal knowledge of Mariota as a player. Wright does indeed see plenty of similarities.
"“Kendall Wright saw two years ago what the transition for a quarterback, picked second overall and coming from a college spread offense, can look like. Marcus Mariota made that move smoothly and now looks poised to join the ranks of the best quarterbacks in the NFL this year with the Tennessee Titans. Can Mitch Trubisky make a similarly successful transition? Wright, so far, has liked what he’s seen.“His overall progression from OTAs to training camp to now, his overall everything he’s done in every area has gotten better,” Wright said. “The work he puts in, it helps him.”"
Mitch Trubisky Marcus Mariota comp all about being a “baller”
Wright wasn’t done there. Above anything else the relationship between a QB and receiver is about trust. One side can’t do all of the work. That was likely the frustrating thing for him in Tennessee. At times he worked with quarterbacks who just couldn’t get the ball in his hands. Then when he finally gets a chance to work with somebody like Mariota, his role in the offense is scaled back significantly.
In a way his signing with the Bears and getting a chance to play with Trubisky in an offense he loves feels like redemption. He certainly believes it’s only a matter of time for the rookie.
"“(Trubisky) can do it all too,” Wright said. “He’s still learning, he’s still getting better, he’s never complacent. He has the ability to get better and he’s willing to get better. He’s a young guy that listens. He’s just a baller. You put him out there and he makes plays.”"
It’s hard to argue that. Through two weeks of preseason Trubisky has two touchdown passes, no interceptions and is completing 72.7% of his passes. Sure he’s had one or two questionable throws in that bunch but that’s normal. Given what he’s had to work with it’s an impressive display that makes Bears fans yearn to see more.
Wright sounds like somebody who is smack in the middle of that group. He’ll never come out and say so, but it’s not hard to read between the lines. If the Mariota comparison is legit, then things are about to get fun.
