Jacksonville Jaguars Make Even More Sense For Colin Kaepernick
By Erik Lambert
The Baltimore Ravens seems perfectly willing to ride it out with the awful Ryan Mallett, but the Jacksonville Jaguars shouldn’t have to endure any longer.
Blake Bortles is just not good anymore. Then again it’s never clear if he was good at all. Most of his top performances were in defeats that saw him pile up stats when his team was trailing. Not the best reputation to have. His preseason performances to this point have only made matters worse. Now the Jaguars made it openly clear that Chad Henne and even Brandon Allen have a clear shot at stealing the starting job from the former #3 overall.
That may sound exciting at first, but the reality is neither Henne nor Allen upgrade the position much at all. They need somebody who can ignite things through sheer talent. So why hasn’t Jacksonville reached out to Colin Kaepernick?
Small media market of JAX is perfect for Kaepernick
There are a number of reasons why Kaepernick makes sense for them. He’s simply better than Bortles for starters. He’s proven to be more consistent and athletic. He does his best work out of a run-first offense as his time in San Francisco proved. Given the still uncertain state of the Jaguars offensive line, his well-known athleticism and scrambling would also be of benefit.
More than anything else though it’s the Jacksonville market itself that makes it obvious. Nobody pays attention to the Jaguars during a season. They’re focused on the Big Three regions of the east coast, west coast and upper Midwest (Chicago, Green Bay etc.). After the initial media rush that is sure to come, it’s fair to expect attention will taper off once the season gets going.
If it can happen for Michael Vick in Philadelphia, it can happen for Kaepernick. Then again stubbornness is a strange thing.
