Indianapolis Colts: Phillip Dorsett Trade Landing Spots
By Erik Lambert
The Indianapolis Colts were bound to undergo changes with new GM Chris Ballard, and a Phillip Dorsett trade could be a major stepping stone.
The past two seasons have been a disappointment for the former 1st round pick. To be fair that’s not all his fault. Injuries set back his rookie years and then injuries to his quarterback, Andrew Luck blunted what could’ve been a strong 2016. Now the prevailing belief is the new regime doesn’t feel he has much of a place in the new plan. Not with T.Y. Hilton already in place. Thus any team interesting in making a deal will have wide open ears from Ballard and his front office.
If this is true, it will be interesting to see if any teams bite. Based on the current outlook around the NFL, here are three teams worth keeping an eye on.
Kansas City Chiefs
A lot of people were taken aback when the Chiefs chose to cut Jeremy Maclin this offseason. It wasn’t like their wide receiving corps was deep to begin with. Then again the price probably grew to be too much for the return. Even so their only two targets of note are Tyreek Hill and Chris Conley. It’s unclear if young draft picks Demarcus Robinson or Jehu Chesson will fill that void. If not, Dorsett could end up forming a wicked speed duo under the far more able Andy Reid.
Buffalo Bills
Trading Sammy Watkins was an interesting decision. Clearly the new regime didn’t have the faith in him to stay healthy and chose to get something back while he still had value. Even so, his exit left a considerable void in their receiving corps. Though they have Jordan Matthews, Anquan Boldin and rookie Zay Jones, they lack a viable deep threat to bring it all together. Swinging a bold move for Dorsett could complete an intriguing revamp of their depth chart.
Chicago Bears
Signing Markus Wheaton back in March was meant to give the Bears that lacking vertical element they haven’t had for years. Since then the receiver has had appendix surgery and broken his finger. It’s unclear where his status on the team is and the offense still struggles to find that big play element. Dorsett would be a much better fit for their scheme where his speed and quickness would be utilized through creative play calls and off play action.
