A year ago there was a consensus that UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen would follow in the footsteps of Troy Aikmen by becoming a #1 pick.

Nobody is debating his talent. Rosen has ever tool in the shed from the bigger body to the strong arm that can consistently deliver accurate passes. There is no doubt he can be a top quarterback in the NFL. If he wants to be. It’s that second part that has a lot of people in orbit around the college campus wondering. It’s not his talent but his drive and attitude that has them wondering.

According to Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, there are a number of people who don’t have high expectations of the young QB. All of it has to do with his inability to place his focus on just football. Oftentimes throughout history this leads to some pretty big draft busts.

"“Josh Rosen is outspoken. He wore a “F–k Trump” hat to the one of the President’s golf courses before Trump was elected. In an interview with Bleacher Report’s Matt Hayes, Rosen talked about the difficulties of being a student-athlete. Scouts, coaches and teammates have also told me of his personality, which can come across as “uncoachable, smarter than all of us and a prick.”In an age when, thanks to social media, players are under a larger spotlight than ever, how will the NFL perceive Rosen? One scout I spoke with said when he looks at Rosen, he sees another version of Colin Kaepernick.”"

Rosen another reflection of a politically-charged country

There can be no doubt that the United States is the most politically-charged and volatile its been in decades. Not since the 1960s. People can say Donald Trump started it all but the truth is this has been a slow buildup for years. Colin Kaepernick and his gesture was just one of the sparks that lit off the fuse. As anybody knows, few people embrace political credos more strongly than college students, which Rosen still is.

Considering his mother is a journalist, this shouldn’t be surprising. He’s grown up with the idea of questioning authority built into his head. Not to mention the accusations that he feels smarter and better educated than most people he meets. For common life that isn’t so bad, but in the hierarchy of football that classifies somebody as a “headcase.” Coaches don’t like players who constantly insist they know better or create unwanted distractions.

Rosen is a danger of bringing both of those problems and others to the table. It’s little wonder his head coach, Jim Mora Jr., doesn’t believe he’ll declare for the draft in 2018.
