It turns out the Brock Osweiler trade may not have been centered around just money and a draft pick. The Cleveland Browns may be serious about him.

The first indicator of this was their unwillingness in subsequent weeks since that trade to either cut or trade him elsewhere. As time went on the buzz coming out of Cleveland continued to grow. The infatuation of coaches with him wasn’t any sort of smokescreen. They liked him and seemed more willingly on a daily basis to give him a legitimate shot to start.

This of course drew confusion and outrage. Why would the Browns subject themselves to this after what happened with Osweiler in Houston? Never mind how well rookie DeShone Kizer played in his first preseason action. It wasn’t until the honest Joe Thomas made it clear what his thoughts were that things came to light.

"“I think they’re grooming Brock [Osweiler] to be the starter Week 1,” Thomas told reporters Wednesday, via Cleveland.com. “I don’t expect DeShone Kizer to be the starter week one.”He added: “Just because DeShone [Kizer] might be good in a few years doesn’t mean he’s ready now.”"

Thomas has seen more than a few quarterbacks flame out in Cleveland. It’s been the story of his career. The greatest left tackle of the past decade guarding the backside of a laundry list of flops. Sad. Nonetheless others have since picked up the cry that Osweiler is indeed poised to start.

No doubt the Browns are trying to see if Osweiler is salvageable while also trying to delay Kizer’s debut. Not because they don’t believe he’s the future but because they agree with Thomas. They don’t believe he’s ready. Not a surprise considering this was the knock on him coming out of Notre Dame. Either way it’s a big break for Osweiler. Can he take advantage?
