Chicago Bears: 5 Players With Most To Lose In Preseason Week 2
By Erik Lambert
The Chicago Bears still have plenty of evaluations to get through before they’re ready for opening day, and preseason week two is a big part of it.
Several positions remain in flux and this game in Arizona will be another step towards figuring out who will start, who will back up and who will get cut. There are a number of notable names who understand that their situations are in real danger of turning for the worse if they flop in this game. Some could lose their starting job, others their roster spot altogether. Here are five names who are undoubtedly feeling the most heat to play well.
Mike Glennon
Make no mistake. It doesn’t matter what the Bears coaches say. The leash just got a hell of a lot shorter for Glennon after that disastrous debut at Soldier Field. All anybody has talked about is the ugly pick six and the 0.0 quarterback rating. Not only that but his primary competition, Mitch Trubisky, looked excellent during his stint in the game. Now Glennon has to go on the road against an Arizona Cardinals defense that ranked 4th against the pass in 2016 with 48 sacks. He better be prepared, otherwise minds will be changing soon enough.
Jeremy Langford
The roller coast career of the former 4th round pick is both remarkable and sad. After a strong rookie year in 2015, it looked like Jeremy Langford was set up to become the starter long-term. Then he got injured. Jordan Howard stepped up while he was out and made the Pro Bowl. This year he simply hoped to secure a roster spot as primary backup but even that’s in danger. While he’s sat out with a nagging ankle problem, others like Ka’Deem Carey, Tarik Cohen and Bennie Cunningham took turns making positive plays. Suddenly his roster spots isn’t so secure.

Zach Miller
Being a good leader really helps the standing of Zach Miller in the locker room. However, it’s not so easy to forget his situation. He’s 33-years old and coming off his second season-ending injury in three years. There’s a reason the Bears added Dion Sims and Adam Shaheen in the draft. They don’t feel they can trust Miller to stay healthy anymore. It doesn’t help he’s largely been quiet in training camp and didn’t do anything in the opener. GM Ryan Pace has a habit of removing older players if they aren’t a help on the field. This means Miller is in trouble.
Jaye Howard
A lot of hoopla was made when the Bears signed Jaye Howard. They felt if he was healthy he could made for a great addition to their defensive line. Unfortunately signs indicate he’s not yet 100% recovered from his hip issue last season. Meanwhile others like Jonathan Bullard and C.J. Wilson stood out in the opener against Denver. As did Mitch Unrein. The margin of error is narrow for Howard. If he struggles or doesn’t even play in Arizona, it will be hard for him to crack the final 53.
Adrian Amos
Sometimes it feels unfair to keep dumping on Adrian Amos. In terms of his tackling and run defense, the safety has been fairly solid over the past two years. Problem is that’s not what the team pays him for. Safeties are expected to make plays. That means turnovers. To date Amos still doesn’t have one. Not an interception or a forced fumble. With the array of new options on the depth chart including Eddie Jackson, it feels like Amos’ time run short unless he can finally break through with a big play.
