Everybody assumes they know what Kirk Cousins is going to do. Meanwhile, to his credit, the man himself hasn’t changed his stance.

The Washington Redskins have had multiple opportunities to sign the Pro Bowl quarterback to a long-term extension. Each time they’ve failed. According to most it’s because they just aren’t willing to pay him top dollar. Cousins isn’t willing to budge from that demand and thus the Redskins are forced to use the franchise tag. They’ve done so twice already. Most agree they won’t be able to do so a third time in 2018 as it will be way too impractical financially.

Thus their only hope now is to work out a long-term deal before he becomes a free agent next March. The prevailing belief is that Cousins will simply wait things out until that happens and then jump ship for San Francisco. Rumors were hot that he desired to reunite with former coach Kyle Shanahan. Yet according to Sal Paolantonio of ESPN, the quarterback remains adamant about what his desires are.

He has viable reasons to say that, one way or another

Now of course he could just be saying that to avoid any controversies before the season. Not an unheard of tactic in the past. Then again there is reason for Cousins to want to stay besides just the money. After all, his greatest career success didn’t come under the guidance of Shanahan. It’s been over the past two years with Jay Gruden. This is something a lot of people are discounting.

Cousins is almost 30-years old. Though he does have knowledge of Shanahan’s system, it’s nowhere near the level he does Gruden’s. It would take time to readjust and there’s no guarantee he’d play at the same level he is right now. Why end what’s been a good thing? So all he has to do is keep playing well and dare the Redskins to not meet his price.

If they refuse, they truly are one of the most dysfunctional organizations in the business.
