The Cleveland Browns have nowhere to go but up after finishing 1-15 last season. It’s merely a matter of how fast and how far they can climb.

A vital key to this is their quarterback position. Ever since the franchise was brought back to life in the late 1990s, it just hasn’t found the same magic it used to have at QB with names like Otto Graham, Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar. For one reason or another each of their major ventures to solving the issue has met with failure be it pricey free agents or high draft choices.

Hopes are high that 2nd round pick DeShone Kizer is ready to flip the script. The Notre Dame product was widely considered the most overall talented QB in the 2017 draft class. Concerns surrounded issues with inconsistency, a slow processor and rumors of a diva attitude. It’s hard to know if that last part is true, but the tape revealed the first two are.

No doubt the idea was that head coach Hue Jackson could coach him up. Well according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the team is inching towards a momentous decision.

Lack of competition playing a huge part in his ascent

On the one hand it’s great news to heard this. It means the coaches are satisfied with Kizer’s progress and believe he’s getting to a point where he can start. On the other? It’s hard not to see this as an indictment of the rest of the depth chart. Brock Osweiler has playoff experience and he’s already losing ground to a rookie 2nd round pick with the preseason not even half over. Cody Kessler is already on the scout team with no real shot at the job.

It’s clearer than ever that the Browns are reaching the point where they’ve accepted reality. They just aren’t going to be very good this season. Too many holes still remain on the roster and it’s a young one as well. Better to elevate Kizer now, get him some vital on-field experience in hopes of using their vast 2018 draft arsenal to load up for a possible run.
