There is still a ways to go before the Denver Broncos make any decisions at quarterback, but it’s safe to say their desired results haven’t happened.

It was no secret that many in the organization were really hoping that former 1st round pick Paxton Lynch would come out firing in training camp this year. They wanted to see him start mastering the nuances of the pro game and apply his considerable talent to becoming their franchise guy of the future. Instead it’s pretty much been a replay of last year.

Lynch still showcases that impressive arm at times, but his consistency remains a big problem. Meanwhile his primary competition Trevor Siemian continues to show his clear mastery of NFL offensive execution. It’s getting to a point where some watching the process play out believe he’s begun to separate himself from Lynch in the competition.

"“I think today you actually saw some separation,” NFL Network’s James Palmer reported Friday. “In my opinion, watching all the seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills, Trevor Siemian really had a better day than Paxton Lynch.”A raw performer as a rookie, Lynch gave way on Friday to Siemian, who showed better mastery of the attack after 14 mostly solid starts for the Broncos a year ago.“You saw after Lynch had a couple of struggling reps, Trevor Siemian comes in, runs the play action, throws a dime into the quarter of the end zone for a touchdown,” Palmer said. “The next play, play action, would have been a touchdown, but [was] dropped by tight end Jeff Heuerman in the end zone. Siemian looking just more poised in the spot.”"

Broncos title window getting precarious

When Denver won the Super Bowl in 2015, it was felt that they were poised to do it again multiple times. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. When Peyton Manning retired it created a void under center that every team knows is so difficult to fill. Even for a former QB running the show like John Elway. Siemian was decent but not at the level they need to take on the best of the AFC.

In that regard Lynch may be their only hope, unless Siemian takes a big step up. They don’t have the running game to help compensate for this issue, a continue problem that deserves some criticism. Perhaps an improved offensive line sparked by the arrival of 1st round pick Garrett Bolles will help matters. If can’t overtake his counterpart in preseason, it’s not going to look good.
