2017 NFL Draft: Camp Updates For the Top Quarterbacks
By Erik Lambert
The 2017 NFL draft class has plenty of players who deserve attention, but like every class it will ultimately be defined by its quarterbacks.
Training camps are off and running around the league. Fans are anxious to hear any and all updates they can regarding each of the top QBs. Are they doing well? Are they struggling? Which of them looks like they could start early? These are valid questions that will be answered steadily over the course of the next month. To satiate those fans who can’t wait though, here are some quick blurbs regarding each of the big names.
Mitch Trubisky (Chicago Bears)
The #2 overall pick was heavily noted for botching three snaps from under center during his first padded practice in Bears training camp. A common problem for quarterbacks from a spread offense in college. Aside from that though Trubisky flashed a ton of the natural talent that made him so attractive for Chicago. Most of his passes were precise and never in harms way. He also showcased some of his athleticism on scramble plays.

Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs)
Everything fans loves about Mahomes coming out of Texas Tech was on display during the most recent Chiefs practice. During a a two-minute drill, he showed off that big arm with pinpoint missile down the seam for a big gain. Then he kept the defense guessing with two check downs to the running back before putting the cherry on the sundae with a 15-yard scramble touchdown. It was encouraging stuff to watch. That said Alex Smith was also sharp, so he’s got work to do.
Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans)
The true challenge for Watson coming out of Clemson to the Texans was how much faster the defensive players got. He admitted he wasn’t used to seeing the quickness with which they operated on the other side. In fairness that was the best defense in the NFL last year but the lesson remains the same. Still, coaches are impressed by how rapidly Watson is picking up the playbook and the subtle nuances of the position. Each days he’s operating a bit smoother.
Deshone Kizer (Cleveland Browns)
If anybody has a chip on his shoulder going into 2017, it’s Kizer. He was expected to be a 1st round pick this year and instead fell to the 2nd. Now he’s in Cleveland aiming to prove plenty of doubters wrong. So far his camp has been up and down. A lot of that isn’t his fault with receivers dropping a number of his throws. He’s delivered some impressive strikes at all levels of the field. At the same time the defenders are getting their hands on it a bit too frequently.
