Elvis Dumervil’s next chapter with the 49ers, a new Shanahan
The San Francisco 49ers brought in pass rusher Elvis Dumervil to be a veteran presence on their defense. His connections with the team are interesting…
When Elvis Dumervil was drafted in 2006 by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round, a career full of terrorizing quarterbacks was born.
Dumervil quickly established himself as one of the premiere pass rushers in all of football, notching 63.5 sacks with the Broncos in six seasons, missing the entire 2010 campaign with a torn pectoral.
Not having Dumervil in 2010 contributed to the Broncos’ worst season in recent memory, allowing them to pick Von Miller 2nd overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. The pairing of Miller and Dumervil was something fans had merely dreamed of, and was as-advertised on the field.
The duo quickly became known around Denver as ‘Von-Doom’, but a fax machine snafu following the 2012 season prevented the two from going any further together.
Dumervil had signed a revised contract with the Broncos, but it wasn’t turned into the league office in time and he became a free agent. Rather quickly, he was signed by the Baltimore Ravens, where he again did what he has always done best – get to the quarterback.

After a few very good seasons in Baltimore, Dumervil has struggled recently but still drew the interest of a former teammate in John Lynch, the newest general manager of the 49ers.
Lynch knows the value of a veteran pass rusher in this league, and the value of a leader in the clubhouse with a big-time NFL resumé.
When Dumervil was a rookie with the Broncos, Lynch was a 35-year old veteran, proving he could still play at a Pro Bowl level on a great defense. The Broncos weren’t as good in 2006 as they were in 2015, but their defense back then was still very stout.
The example set by Lynch then is what the 49ers will expect from the veteran Dumervil, whose career path has brought him to a very unique situation. He’s once again in a new NFL city, back together with his old pal John Lynch, and a brand new head coach in Kyle Shanahan.
The last time Dumervil was in a new city with John Lynch and a coach named Shanahan?
You guessed it — 2006 with the Denver Broncos.
Kyle Shanahan was just getting his first break as a position coach when Dumervil broke into the league in 2006, working with the Houston Texans as a wide receivers coach.
11 seasons later, what are young Shanahan’s impressions of the pass rusher his father once drafted?

Dumervil is currently sitting on 99 career sacks. It’s fitting that no. 100 will come with a Shanahan as his head coach, and Lynch looking on proudly.
