The Los Angeles Chargers have added a young quarterback to the mix

Former Ohio State National Champion and Buffalo Bills quarterback Cardale Jones is finding a new home on the west coast. The Los Angeles Chargers have acquired the 24-year-old backup quarterback from Buffalo for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

The deal reconnects Jones with his former offensive coordinator in Buffalo, now Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn.

Buffalo selected Jones with the 139th overall pick last year out of Ohio State in the 2016 NFL Draft. Jones appeared in only one game for the Bills as a rookie, throwing for 96 yards with an interception in a 30-10 loss to the Jets.

News of the trade bodes well for Bills rookie Nathan Peterman, whom the team drafted out of Pittsburgh on the third day of the 2017 Draft. Expected to sit behind Tyrod Taylor to start the season, Peterman has many positive attributes as a player that cause many to believe he could be a starter in the future.

Peterman threw 47 touchdowns in his final two years with the Pitt Panthers, and with Taylor on the ropes going forward, the kid may get an opportunity this year.

Along with Peterman and Taylor in the Bills quarterback room is recently signed veteran T.J. Yates.

As for the Chargers, the addition of Jones all but ends their search for a backup quarterback. The team worked out former Redskin Robert Griffin III, but the addition of Jones would likely end that potential marriage.

Jones joins veterans Philip Rivers and Kellen Clemens in the Chargers quarterback room, and undrafted free agents Mike Bercovici and Eli Jenkins.

With Jones under team control through the 2019 season, Los Angeles has a young candidate to potentially replace the 35-year-old Rivers down the road.
