NFL Power Ranking: Sophomore Quarterbacks
By Zack Marji
2: Carson Wentz
The Philadelphia Eagles traded with the Cleveland Browns for the 2nd overall pick and then used that pick to draft Carson Wentz. A Sam Bradford trade shot Wentz up the depth chart, and he started all 16 games going 7-9 while throwing 3,782 yards 16 TDs and 14 interceptions.
For a rookie that’s a pretty good season, a season in which he threw for more yards than household names like Cam Newton and Alex Smith ranking 18th in the NFL in that category. Wentz did not have the best offense around him either.
With the exception of Jordan Matthews, he had a poor receiving corps which included very mediocre such as Dorial Green Beckham and Nelson Agholor. Boasting one of the better O-lines in the NFL his 14 picks and 33 sacks shows the lack of help from receivers causing him to hold the ball for too long quite frequently.
The Eagles added WR Alshon Jeffery and WR Torrey Smith to the mix while drafting Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson on day three. A passer rating of 79.3 on the season and poor TD ratio are what keep Wentz from being the best QB in this class but expect a huge leap in his game next year.
