NFL Power Ranking: Sophomore Quarterbacks
By Zack Marji
4: Jared Goff
If you don’t know already, the first overall pick from 2016 didn’t have a great year. Goff’s first start was a winnable game versus the Miami Dolphins, where he produced only 100 yards against in a 14-10 loss with no TDs. He then had his best game in his second start against New Orleans. Getting blown out, he threw for 214 yards and a 3:1 TD ratio on a soft defense.
His next five starts he was stomped on by Super Bowl contenders and stout defenses with the exception of San Francisco. But even they were too stingy of a defense for Goff as he threw for 90 yards and one touchdown while surrendering four sacks and two picks. That’s against arguably the worst or second worst defense in the league.
Divisional game or not that defense was as bad as the Browns’. Goff finished the season with five touchdowns to seven picks and only throwing for a little over 1,000 yards in seven starts. The story also lies in the Rams O-line as Goff was sacked 26 times. Averaging a passer rating of 63.3 in those games, Goff and the Rams have a lot of work to do if he is to live up to first overall expectations.
