NFL Power Ranking: Sophomore Quarterbacks
By Zack Marji
T-5: Jacoby Brissett
In the ranking of the top-five 2016 rookie quarterbacks, we begin with two quarterbacks who didn’t start for more than three games. New England’s Jacoby Brissett played two and a half games in relief as a result of Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury and Tom Brady’s suspension. In his three games, he went 2-1 teeing up the win against Miami. The Patriots then blew out the Texans with the rookie quarterback in JJ Watt’s last game of 2016 before going down.
That’s impressive for any rookie quarterback but looking closer we see he only generated 151 total yards (103 passing, 48 rushing) on 11 completions and eight rushes. He posted a measly pass 72.9 passer rating but threw no interceptions nor touchdowns while also rushing for a touchdown. While these are pretty solid numbers for a rookie in his first start, many point to the coaching in Bill Belichick’s system.
The following game he fell apart against the Buffalo Bills not managing to put up a single point for his team in the loss. In the process, he fumbled twice but threw for 200 yards and 86.2 passer rating. A solid dual threat quarterback but he fumbled the ball three times in two and a half games so if he can’t fix that then he loses a lot of his value since he isn’t a high volume passer.
