NFL: Biggest Offseason Question For Each AFC West Team
Oakland Raiders: Who will help Khalil Mack in the sack department?
For a 12-win team that surprised many in 2016, one aspect that stuck out like a sore thumb was the fact that the team were dead last in sacks with just 25.
The team has a true stud at defensive end in Khalil Mack as he is coming off a season with 54 tackles, 11 sacks, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, as well as an interception and pick-6. Mack took his rightful place in the Pro Bowl, All-Pro first team, and earned 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Next in line in terms of sack numbers was outside linebacker Bruce Irvin with seven. The drop-off after those two defenders was incredibly ineffective.
Defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. is returning from a season-ending hip injury in 2016 after totaling 33 tackles and two sacks in his rookie season of 2015. His presence will help, but more is needed at this point. As I make that statement, I can’t help but wonder how useful a young Aldon Smith would be at this point for the Raiders.
If the Raiders want to take that important transition from “surprise playoff team” to “possible Super Bowl contender,” a boost from those around Mack and Irvin is greatly needed.
