2. Johnny Unitas (Pittsburgh, PA)

“Johnny U” was undervalued throughout the beginning of his playing career due to his slight frame.  Scouts didn’t believe he could hold up in an NFL season, having him drop all the way to the 9th round of the 1955 NFL Draft.  After not making the Steelers’ roster in 1955, Unitas joined the Colts without knowing how perfect the pairing would be. After a shaky start to his Colts’ career, he bounced back to the tune of ten Pro-Bowls, seven All-Pro teams, three AP NFL MVP awards, three Bert Bell awards, the NFL Man of the Year Award.  He led statistically in passing yards and passing TDs four times each.

Unitas was a three time NFL Champion and a one-time Super Bowl champ.  He was named to the 75th Anniversary Team and the 1960s Decade Team.  He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979 after passing for 40,239 yards and 290 TDs in an era that was not dedicated to the pass.
