Trace McSorley: Penn State quarterback highlights
Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley is coming off of a phenomenal sophomore campaign, one where he threw for 29 touchdown passes and just eight INTs…
For all the fanfare some college quarterbacks are receiving, there doesn’t seem to be enough attention being paid to Penn State’s Trace McSorley, who had a breakout sophomore campaign.
In 2016, McSorley completed over 57 percent of his passes for 3,614 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. He added seven rushing touchdowns, but because sack yardage is taken off of his rushing total, we won’t even mention the yards. They are poor compared to what they probably actually were when McSorley used his legs.
Not only was McSorley productive, he was clutch. Here’s a graphic from Pro Football Focus to prove exactly why:
College football fans should get to know McSorley a little bit better, especially since he’s pairing up with Saquan Barkley to form what is probably the best quarterback/running back combination in the Big Ten for sure, and also possibly the entire nation.
McSorley doesn’t have the 6-foot-5, 230 pound frame NFL teams covet, which is probably a major reason why he’s not being more universally talked about. However, if he can improve upon his 57 percent completion percentage from a year ago and prove he can still make good decisions with the football on a higher volume of passes, NFL scouts might overlook his stature.
McSorley is an exciting playmaker from the quarterback position, and one who offers both in terms of the passing game and the running game. He makes Penn State a legitimate threat to come out of the Big Ten this season despite the fact that many have already pegged either Ohio State or Michigan as this year’s top contenders.
This kid has a chance to lead Penn State to something special this season, so keep your eyes out.
