#3:  Max McGee

People remember the name Max McGee for one primary reason. It’s a rather famous story now. The night before Super Bowl I, he spent the entire night out on the town. When the time came to dress for the game, the Packers wide receiver was clearly hung over from the fun he’d had. Teammates were concerned he could be a problem if he got in the game. Sure enough fellow receiver Boyd Dowler went down and in he had to go. Instead of faltering though, McGee caught seven passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

It’s a game that should’ve won him MVP honors, but also overshadows how good of a player he actually was. At the time he was 34-years old. During the first half of the 1960s he was among the best receivers in football despite playing in a run-heavy offense. He went over 700 yards in a season four times and reached the Pro Bowl in 1961. He’d also averaged over 19 yards per catch four times as well. Maybe he’d be remembered better had he played in a more pass-happy system.
