#5:  Charlie Ane

That saying “big things come in small packages” was true for Charlie Ane. In total he only played seven seasons in the NFL. He was retired before the age of 29. Why he left is an interesting fact in and of itself. He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the expansion draft of 1960. Rather than going over to a team that was just starting and would be bad, he chose to retire. After all, it wasn’t like there was much left for him to accomplish by that point.

Ane won an NFL championship in his very first season with the Detroit Lions and then proceeded to become one of the most versatile offensive linemen in the league. His first three years were spent at tackle before he moved inside to center. There was where he made his two Pro Bowl appearances and won his second NFL title in 1957. He might never have reached the Hall of Fame had he kept playing, but people might appreciate him more today.
