The 5 Greatest NFL Players From the State of Alaska
By Erik Lambert
#1: Mark Schlereth
Alaska sure can breed some odd characters and Mark Schlereth is the epitome of that. A 10th round pick out of Idaho, the Anchorage native worked his way into the starting lineup for the Washington Redskins at right guard. In 1991 he was a key part of their huge offensive success, leading to a Super Bowl victory and his first Pro Bowl. Unfortunately the coming of free agency forced the team to gut much of the roster and he was among the sacrifices.
Schlereth chose to sign with the Denver Broncos to become their left guard. In addition to help forge one of the best offensive lines of the 1990s, he also established a reputation for quirky behavior. This includes peeing his pants in the huddle during games. Whatever works for him, I guess. He paved the way for eventual MVP Terrell Davis on the ground and helped John Elway win two Super Bowls to round out his Hall of Fame career. Schlereth earned another Pro Bowl for the work he put in.
