The Los Angeles Rams made some significant moves on the defensive side of the ball this offseason, namely adding Wade Phillips and Kayvon Webster…

A disastrous offense may be the story of the 2017 Los Angeles Rams, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t make some significant moves this offseason to upgrade their defense.

First and foremost, the Rams brought in Wade Phillips, the architect of probably the best defense in recent NFL history: The 2015 Denver Broncos. Phillips helped recruit one of his former players in Denver, cornerback Kayvon Webster, to start at cornerback opposite Trumaine Johnson.

Of course, nothing will be handed to Webster, but his time to break out in the NFL is long overdue.

In his rookie season with the Denver Broncos, Webster filled in when the Broncos suffered injuries at the cornerback position, and was doing a pretty great job all things considered, until he also suffered an injury of his own.

Webster tried playing through the injury, but the following offseason, the Broncos signed Aqib Talib and drafted Bradley Roby in the first round. Snaps on the defense were hard to come by for Webster, who didn’t lack talent, but was caught in the numbers game.

That was, until he discovered his talent on special teams. Webster was a key piece of the Broncos’ 2015 Super Bowl run as a special teams ace, helping shift field position and make big plays in the game’s third phase.

He continued that excellence this past season, which ended up being his final one with the Broncos. Oddly enough, he didn’t play a ton in the Broncos’ defense despite his talent. Even though Wade Phillips has spoken highly of him since the Rams brought him in, he didn’t exactly bend over backwards to get Webster on the field while in Denver.

That said, I think Webster is primed for big time success in Los Angeles. He’s got a very aggressive style of play and can obviously hit, but I’m excited to see him make some play on the ball getting the majority of attention with Johnson on the opposite side.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Webster was one of the top breakout players in the league this season given his talent and the scheme he’s playing in, but also considering how good the pass rushers are that are playing in front of him.

This will end up being a solid career move for Webster, who has worked his way from unknown third round pick to a projected starter for a Wade Phillips defense in LA.
