The Kansas City Chiefs just delivered one of the stunners of the summer when they extended head coach Andy Reid right before firing GM John Dorsey.

It’s a move that really caught many by surprise. There was no indication at all that there were internal problems at the top. At least not on a national level. Yet there is no denying it. After four years and three playoff appearances, Dorsey is out. The decision to extend Reid at the same time speaks volumes about who Chiefs ownership really credits with the success of the team over that span. This despite Dorsey have a good degree of success in the draft.

During his tenure the Chiefs were able to secure Pro Bowl talents like Travis Kelce, Marcus Peters and Tyreek Hill. So why was he cut loose? There are plenty of possibilities. A difference of opinion with ownership on the direction of the team. Or more simply a lack of expected progress. For his success in the draft, the fact is Dorsey has produced just one playoff win in four season despite inheriting what was already a pretty good roster.

Power shift to Reid?

Another possibility is the fact that the team may be shifting the responsibilities of roster management to Andy Reid himself. By this point the veteran head coach has been around long enough know how to juggle both jobs. If anybody deserves the benefit of the doubt, it would be him. After all, it’s work swimmingly for Bill Belichick in New England for years.

Sure the Chiefs will still hire a general manager to replace Dorsey, but that will be intended more as a right hand man to Reid. Somebody who can direct the scouting department to search for players that fit Reids’ vision. Keep in mind this is a job Reid held from 2001 to 2012 with the Philadelphia Eagles. During that span they reached  five NFC championships and a Super Bowl. He knows what he’s doing.
