It’s hard to imagine John Fox lasting beyond 2017 for the Chicago Bears. There are just so many thing going against him at this point in time.

Assuming GM Ryan Pace gets another crack at getting that job right, smart money says he pursues a coach who can get the most out of Mitch Trubisky at quarterback. So expect a similar setup to what he saw in New Orleans with Drew Brees and Sean Payton. An offensive head coach who can build the system around the quarterback. Here is a list of five names who could fit that bill. Keeping in mind none of them are head coaches elsewhere.

Josh McDaniels

Signs remain that the Patriots may view offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as the heir apparent to Bill Belichick. That could be the reason he doesn’t seek a head coaching job moving forward. If he does though, it’s hard to deny his candidacy. McDaniels is an offensive wizard who’s gotten the best years out of Tom Brady and even Kyle Orton. His creative play calling and love for accurate, precise quarterbacks would make it a natural fit for Trubisky.

Darrell Bevell

It remains somewhat surprising that Darrell Bevell hasn’t gotten his own team yet. The Seahawks offensive coordinator has had enough success to warrant it. He’s turned Russell Wilson into an MVP-caliber passer, won a Super Bowl and even got arguably the best year out of Brett Favre in his storied career. Nobody knows why he continues to get passed over, especially given his history with quarterbacks. Perhaps it’s a personality thing.

More from NFL Mocks

Todd Haley

People give him a bad rap for how things ended in Kansas City. Granted they weren’t pretty but it’s important to remember Todd Haley got Matt Cassel to a Pro Bowl. That has to be worth something. Then there’s the fact he’s gotten terrific years out of Kurt Warner and Ben Roethlisberger. When he has the talent at quarterback, the guy has proven he knows exactly what to do with it. Trubisky seems like just his type too.

Jim Bob Cooter

Funny name aside there is no arguing with what Jim Bob Cooter has done for the Detroit Lions. Matthew Stafford became a better football player when Cooter was promoted to offensive coordinator. Since then they’ve racked up numbers and lots of late comebacks. He understands how to put quarterbacks in position to succeed with the right play calls. It starts with increasing the completion rate and trying to balance the offense with more running. Hard to argue the results.

Mike Shula

He’s the son of the winningest head coach of all-time. So that has to count for something. Then there’s the fact that Mike Shula has proven himself a capable coach in his own right. He’s highly experienced as a coordinator and turned Cam Newton into an MVP. He head coached at Alabama for four years, so he has prior experience and was a quarterbacks coach at other stops. The guy knows the position inside and out. Why not give him a shot?
