New England Patriots: Who will take the lead role at RB in a crowded backfield?

Over the years, New England has been implementing a committee approach at the running back position. Outside of the occasional big year from maybe a Corey Dillon (a name you have not heard in a while) or Stevan Ridley, it has been mainly whoever has the hot hand as the running back of choice on a week-to-week basis.

The same will probably be applied this season with the team moving on from former starter LeGarrette Blount, who led the team in rushing and rushing touchdowns in 2016. While Blount posted 1,162 rushing yards in the regular season, next in line was Dion Lewis with 283 and after him was James White with 166.

So while the team has the legendary Tom Brady at quarterback and a loaded receiving corps, the offensive unit would benefit immensely from a run game that is consistent if not game-breaking.

So with the likes of White, Lewis, and newly acquired running backs Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee, there will likely be a thorough competition during training camp and preseason that will determine a “pecking order” of sorts. All four backs share similar qualities, but someone has to ultimately win the job.
