Buffalo Bills – 2005

There are plenty of reasons for why the Buffalo Bills haven’t made the playoffs once since the start of the new millennium. Bad coaching is a big one but right behind that is a consistent streak of average-to-poor drafts. The bottoming out period struck in 2005. Like many bad drafts it was preceded the year before by the Bills’ ill-advised trade up in the first round to grab quarterback J.P. Losman. Not only did that move blow up in their faces, but it also killed their chance to get an actual franchise quarterback in 2005.

Keep this in mind. Had the Bills not made that trade, they would’ve had the 20th overall pick in this draft. That means a young quarterback named Aaron Rodgers likely would have fallen in their laps instead of dropping to #24 and joining the Packers. It was a brutal reminder of what can happen when reaching for a perceived roster need. Drew Bledsoe was only 32 that year. They could’ve waited one more season. Instead they settled for a draft that produced guys like Roscoe Parrish, Kevin Everett and Duke Preston. Players who did next to nothing for the franchise.
