The Worst NFL Drafts From All 32 Teams Since the Year 2000
By Erik Lambert
Oakland Raiders – 2001
One could say this was the draft that preceded the steep decline of the Oakland Raiders just a couple years later. The team just didn’t know it at the time. They were too busy in the middle of a serious push to reach the Super Bowl. They wouldn’t get there until a year later, but did so without much help from this class. It just wasn’t good. Like at all from top to bottom. None of the picks started more than two seasons with the team and all were gone within five years.
Everybody knows that Al Davis held a high value on defensive backs that could either play man coverage or lay down a serious hit. Strong safety Derrick Gibson was expected to fall into the latter category but he never really got going. The bigger misfire though may have been 2nd round QB Marques Tuiasosopo. The hope at the time was he’d become the heir apparent to the aging Rich Gannon. It never materialized. He started just two games in six seasons, lost both and throw triple the number of interceptions to touchdowns.
