Minnesota Vikings – 2005

Since the 2000s began the Minnesota Vikings have had some decent success in the NFL draft. Especially over the past five years or so. Yet all the bad decision-making and luck turned against them in 2005. Oh doggy it was bad. It’s not a coincidence the team began a steep drop that year that didn’t come back around for four seasons afterwards. Just look at the first pick alone for an idea of how bad it was. Wide receiver Troy Williamson at 7th overall? Wow.

The reason he was picked at all was obvious. The South Carolina product was fast. Really fast. Time has taught us thought that it takes more than speed to be a great receiver. One critical thing? An ability to catch the football, for one. Williams caught less than 50% of the passes thrown his way as a Viking. A huge reason for that was stone hands that led to several drops.

This doesn’t even cover the fact that Minnesota made another 1st round pick after him in Erasmus James who was almost equally disastrous. Just an ugly, ugly draft.
