Kansas City Chiefs – 2001

Constant trades and maneuvering the previous few years had really set up the Kansas City Chiefs for a world of hurt in 2001. Though they did have nine picks in total, none of them were in the 1st or 2nd round. Thus they were missing out on the richest part of the talent pool. What makes it even worse is knowing that 28 future Pro Bowlers were selected in those two rounds. It was one of the best drafts as a far as top end talent of the decade and brutal bad timing by the Chiefs.

Their two 3rd round picks did little to lessen that sting too. Defensive tackle Eric Downing managed two sacks in 45 career games while wide receiver Snoop Minnis caught just 34 passes in his entire NFL career. Fifth round running back Derrick Blaylock flashed briefly during his third season with the team but had problems staying healthy. One might argue this draft was a big reason the Chiefs were a one-and-done playoff team under Dick Vermeil during that era.
