Detroit Lions – 2005

To this day if you want to make a Detroit Lions fan groan, just mention the name Matt Millen. For years the former linebacker has maintained a death grip on the job of team president. During that time he produced a string of terrible drafts that showcased just how ill-prepared he was for the job. It was revealed later that he had a hard time taking command of the room, instead deferring to others and going with their suggestions. That led to a lack of a plan.

In such situations that’s how the 2005 draft happened. For context, keep in mind the Lions had already selected a 1st round wide receiver in each of the two previous drafts. So when Millen took receiver Mike Williams with the 10th pick, the torches and pitch forks were out. The poor kid never stood a chance. The rest of the class predictably underwhelmed as well. Amazingly Millen hung on to his job for another three years before the Lions finally fired him.
