Mike Williams’ injury history is already scaring Chargers fans

Los Angeles Charger wide receiver Mike Williams is scheduled to miss at least two weeks with a herniated disk in his lower back.

The seventh-overall pick in Springs NFL Draft suffered the injury in organized team activities, and will rest heading into training camp later this summer.

Williams joins a wide receiving corp with several “injury prone” players looking for one healthy season.

Williams was a much-needed addition to the Chargers offense, which lost star wide receiver Keenan Allen in the season opener to an ACL injury. The emergence of Tyrell Williams and Hunter Henry supplemented the offense, but a true number two to complement Allen was needed.

Coming out of Clemson Williams had a deep injury history that worried many talent evaluators. The most severe was a neck injury suffered two years ago when Williams ran into a goal post behind the endzone. The result was a fractured bone in his neck, which resulted in his entire season being lost.

Williams managed to return the following season to play 15 games and set personal bests in receiving yards and touchdowns.

Each of the top three receivers in the 2017 NFL Draft class (Williams, Corey Davis, and John Ross) carried long injury histories. Despite being the second receiver taken in the class Williams had the lightest injury history of all three.

With Williams out of organized team activities and Allen recovering from the knee injury, Tyrell Williams and veteran Travis Benjamin will see extended action.
