Colin Kaepernick Seems Destined To Sign With This Team
By Erik Lambert
It’s amazing that Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned given he played pretty well last season and doesn’t turn 30-years old until November.
He’s every bit the athlete he was a few years ago and still has plenty of juice in that rocket right arm. So why hasn’t a team pulled the trigger? Everybody knows the answer by this point. He’s become a media lightning rod following his national anthem controversy. It doesn’t matter if he did it for the right reasons and continues to be charitable. The fact is he draws news and news draws cameras. Winning in the NFL is hard enough without distractions. Kaepernick is a distraction.
At the same time he’s much too talented to expect he’ll remain a free agent all season. Some team is going to reach a point where they feel compelled to bring him in. Probably out of necessity. If there is any team that fits this bill best, it has to be the New York Jets.
It might not be that bad, but it sure looks like it
Seriously what about the Jets QB situation look in the least bit favorable at this point? Josh McCown, though a respected veteran was at his best as a backup. He’s never had success as a starter anywhere in his career. Bryce Petty didn’t make the best impression last season when he got a chance to start. That of course leaves Christian Hackenberg who’d devolved into a train wreck by the time he left Penn State.
Maybe he’s regained some luster from that freshman year so long ago but it’s hard to imagine that as possible. This basically means the Jets are going into the season with no legitimate starting quarterback. Given some of the other concerns on their offense, particulary up front, this is a disaster waiting to happen.
Kaepernick might not be the ideal solution but he’d definitely be an upgrade over what they have. He can be efficient with the football and has the mobility to survive a bad offensive line. New York will put it off, maintaining their denial stage right up until it’s too late. Then they’ll sign him when he can no longer make any sort of difference in 2017.
