If there is anything that can make the 2017 NFL training camp season compelling, it will be a host of potential quarterback battles across several rosters.

There seem to be more this year than in previous seasons of late. Or least more that involve the starting jobs. There are backup battles all the time. A mix of no surefire starters and intriguing rookies have made for an unusually compelling landscape. One where no clear winner stands out. Five rosters in particular hold this current status.

#5:  Los Angeles Rams:  Jared Goff vs. Sean Mannion

It’s all but a certainty that the Rams brought in head coach Sean McVay for one reason. That’s to make sure former #1 overall pick Jared Goff is given every opportunity to realize his potential as a franchise quarterback. His rookie season was rough going for a variety of reasons from poor scheming to limited talent around him. It’s hoped both problems have been adequately addressed. Now it’s a matter of Goff putting in the work to become what he should be.

At the same time there were rumblings that the new coaching staff wasn’t totally sold on him. In fact the whispers hinted their intrigue with current backup and former 3rd round pick Sean Mannion. He came from a pro-style scheme at Oregon State and understands the advanced nuances of the position. He’s also got size and a decent arm going for him. Though the chances are long at this point, a productive training camp and preseason might shift the momentum.
