Why The Dallas Cowboys Are Kings of Undrafted Free Agency
By Erik Lambert
#1: Tony Romo
Love it or hate it, there is no arguing it. Tony Romo was the best undrafted signing in Dallas Cowboys history. Why? He’s a quarterback and successful quarterbacks who don’t get drafted aren’t supposed to exist. They’re like a unicorn. Impossible to find. Yet the Cowboys did, plucking him out of Eastern Illinois back in 2003. Not a single person knew what they were getting at the time. He was viewed as a long-term project and likely a career backup.
Then Bill Parcells made the decision to go with him as the starter in 2006. A big decision considering it was to replace Drew Bledsoe, a two-time Pro Bowler. Romo never looked back. He became the franchise all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, reaching four Pro Bowls in the process. Not to mention his 25 comebacks in the 4th quarter people shrug off because they always viewed him as the reason the franchise never won a Super Bowl during his time there.
They’re wrong, but that’s not the point. Romo is deserves the top spot on this list.
