#1:  Michael Vick

Talk about a career swerve of epic proportions. In 2004 Michael Vick was a legitimate phenomenon. A one-man highlight package that could do things on the football field people had never seen before. His singular brilliance helped carry the Atlanta Falcons to the NFC playoffs that year and he was getting Michael Jordan levels of attention. It was the perfect time to place him on the cover. Can’t say it didn’t work for the game. It remains one of the highest rated in the franchises’ history.

It better have been because it may have cost Vick everything. Truthfully his own stupidity did most of it but there was bad luck involved too. The very next year he broke his leg in the preseason. Literally five days after the cover was released no less. He didn’t get back until almost December of that year and the Falcons were well out of the playoff picture by that point. Two years later his career was drastically forestalled when he landed in prison on a two-year sentence for dog fighting. His career was never quite the same after that.
