#3:  Donovan McNabb

A man who was on top of the world at the time. Donovan McNabb ranked among the best quarterbacks in the NFL by 2005. The previous year he’d reached his fifth-straight Pro Bowl, throwing for 3,800 yards and 31 touchdowns. Both career highs. The Philadelphia Eagles reached the Super Bowl for the first time since 1980 but fell just short against the Patriots (sensing a theme yet?) Most expected him to take it the rest of the way the next year.

Not so much. McNabb was hampered almost from the start that season with a sports hernia. He tried playing through it but a hit during a Dallas Cowboys game put an end to that. The injury was made worse and he needed season-ending surgery. The Eagles finished 6-10, their first losing season in six years. McNabb would make just one more Pro Bowl in his entire career, a span of seven seasons, after appearing on that cover.
