The cost of a franchise quarterback in today’s NFL
Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles
For the right to draft Carson Wentz, the Philadelphia Eagles gave up at least a first or second round draft pick spanning three draft classes. The blow was softened by the Eagles’ trade of Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings for a first round pick last year after the Vikings lost Teddy Bridgewater.
Philadelphia’s loss of mid-round picks here is essentially inconsequential as GM Howie Roseman has been a wizard in free agency the last two years, but the loss of a second round pick next year does sting a little bit.
As is the case with any of these moves, however, the lack of a second round pick won’t matter if the Eagles truly have a franchise QB on their hands, and Wentz showed signs of that last year. Now, Philadelphia has surrounded him with big time talent and speed, and he’s primed for a big jump in 2017.
