Dallas Cowboys: Reviewing Undrafted Free Agent Signings
By Brady Lunt
After a successful 2017 draft class that resolved several needs on defense, the Cowboys have signed several undrafted free agents that could see early playing time.
When Mr. Irrelevant, the 253rd pick in the NFL Draft, is selected, all teams are free to pounce on remaining players who went undrafted. Free agents (those undrafted) are now free to sign where they please. And while you may think many of these players can’t have an impact, you’d be wrong. While they did go undrafted, many of them are players that can make a roster.
In the case of the Dallas Cowboys, we’ve seen quite a few success stories.
First and foremost is Tony Romo, who is the all-time Cowboys’ leader in just about every passing statistic recorded. Others include recently-departed safety Barry Church, who had a successful career in Dallas. Kicker Dan Bailey, one of the best in the league, went undrafted out of Oklahoma State. Cole Beasley went undrafted, as did Ron Leary.
Are you seeing my point? The Dallas Cowboys have had success during the draft in recent years. But it’s their success after the draft that has some impact on this roster. With that being said, let’s take a look at some of the signings already reported.

The Cowboys were predicted in multiple mock drafts, including my own, to select an offensive lineman. While they didn’t secure one in the draft, they’ve signed two that I believe will compete for a spot on the roster.
While Dan Skipper obviously is a mountain of a man and will get recognition for it, I believe Levon Myers is the cream of this crop so far. He has great size for the position, but his athleticism and quickness are what is intriguing. He can be an immediate swing tackle and could play guard if needed.
I’ve mocked Levon Myers to the Cowboys before and believe he is capable of fighting for the right tackle spot in the future.

You’ll also notice no quarterback was taken. Cooper Rush wasn’t a hot name in draft circles, as he lacks the arm strength to challenge defenses. But his comparison to Kellen Moore should only explain why OC Scott Linehan would like him competing for a spot. Jahad Thomas is another name to watch, as the depth behind Ezekiel Elliott still seems to be circulating.
More may happen in the coming days, but don’t be surprised if a couple names above end up sticking on the roster and contributing down the road.
