The 2017 NFL Draft is in the books, which means it is time to flip the page to the 2018 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns and Myles Garrett proved that even in a pass-happy league, a quarterback is not guaranteed to be the number one overall pick. With that being said, will a QB rise to the top of the board again next April?

Twelve months may seem like a long time, and a lot can change with another season worth of tape to evaluate, but the early word is that a quarterback will be the top pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Not just any quarterback, but Josh Allen of Wyoming. That’s if you want to believe what an anonymous personnel director told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

While Allen may be the favorite at this point, he’s certainly not a lock like Andrew Luck and Jadeveon Clowney were. In fact, a quarterback with one season under his belt, a 56 percent completion rate last season and one career 300-yard passing game (a triple overtime game none the less) is anything but a lock. Of course the NFL Draft is all about projecting what a player “will do” rather than what “he’s done,” but more should be expected of a projected top pick from the Mountain West Conference.

So if Allen doesn’t take that next step forward in his development, who are the other candidates for the number one overall pick next season? Here’s a look at five prospects who will challenge Allen and could be the first player off the board in the 2018 NFL Draft.
