2017 NFL Draft: If the thought is to get a quarterback at any cost, the 2017 NFL Draft was a prime example. Teams reached to get signal callers badly…

Quarterbacks can cause NFL teams do make bold decisions. Or dumb, depending how you see it. In the case of the 2017 NFL Draft, general managers and NFL executives decided to stake their reputations and potentially their jobs on the fate of three young quarterbacks, all having their significant flaws.

To acquire the second overall pick in this year’s draft — one spot ahead of their original pick — the Chicago Bears surrendered the 3rd, 67th, and 111th overall picks in this year’s draft and a 3rd round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

With the second pick, the Bears took Mitchell Trubisky out of North Carolina.

To acquire the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft, the Kansas City Chiefs surrendered the 27th and 91st overall picks in this year’s draft, and a 1st round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

With the 10th pick, the Chiefs selected Patrick Mahomes II out of Texas Tech.

And finally, to acquire the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft, the Houston Texans surrendered the 25th overall pick in this year’s draft and a 1st round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

With the 12th pick, the Texans selected DeShaun Watson out of Clemson.

More from NFL Mocks

In all, five first round picks (including the picks they were selected with) and four third round picks were invested in these young quarterbacks. Worth it?

Only time will tell, but as of right now, it seems like a huge mistake.

The highest ranked quarterback on my board was Patrick Mahomes, and he was ranked 30th overall among all prospects. DeShaun Watson followed closely behind at 31 and Trubisky ranked 41st.

With any of these three guys, the NFL teams that respectively picked them are projecting…

…a lot.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. All is well that ends well, but these executives and coaches had better hope everything ends well. When it comes to the quarterback position, young guys with potential will cause NFL teams to do some crazy things, and we saw evidence of that on Thursday night.
